Drop-off location: Southampton Village Police Department, 151 Windmill Lane, Southampton, NY

The Southampton Village Police Department serves as a drop-off site for Operation Medicine Cabinet, a program implemented to address the environmental and public health concerns associated with the abuse of prescription medication and the improper disposal of medications.

There is growing concern that medications flushed down the drain endanger the aquatic environment and wildlife. Wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove all medications from wastewater. Disposing medication properly helps to reduce the overall risk of exposure to you, your family, and the environment.

The purpose of this program is to collect pharmaceutical waste that consists of controlled substances, prescription medications, unwanted medication, and over-the-counter medications that are no longer needed or have passed their expiration date.

Only items from private households are accepted, including:

  • Over-the-counter medications

  • Prescription medications

  • Medications for household pets

  • Medicated lotions or ointments

Items not accepted:

  • Needles or other “sharps”

  • Thermometers

  • Business/professional waste

  • Liquid medication
